Oystermouth Castle, Mumbles
Standing above Swansea Bay for over 900 years, Oystermouth Castle has long watched the changing tides, shifting light and passing seasons. Rather than focusing on architectural detail, this painting seeks to capture the atmosphere of the place – its enduring presence, the movement of the landscape, and the ever-changing Welsh sky above it.
Built with textured plaster and mixed media, the surface has been sculpted before being painted, allowing the castle, surrounding trees and sweeping foreground to emerge from the panel rather than simply sit upon it. Layers of mark-making and expressive brushwork echo the weathered stone, windswept grass and the energy that continually shapes this historic landscape.
Painted after working on location at Oystermouth Castle, this piece is as much about memory and experience as it is about place. The textures, movement and restrained palette reflect the feeling of standing before the castle beneath a dramatic sky, where history, landscape and atmosphere become inseparable.
An original mixed media painting celebrating one of Gower's most recognisable landmarks through texture, gesture and emotion.
